"Like a Badger" (I) 像獾(ㄏㄨㄢ)一樣

"What are you reading about?" asked Kate as she peered over her brother's shoulder. "O-h-h-h! Look at that little animal! Isn't he cute?"

"You call everything cute!" protested Caleb. "That's a badger, and badgers are interesting, not cute!"

Kate sniffed. "Well, I think that badger is cute," she insisted, "but what do you find so interesting about it?"

"This article says badgers make their homes underground. They dig dens that are interconnected by a whole maze of burrows and passages," said Caleb. "I think that's pretty cool!"

"That is cool," agreed Kate. "That means they can visit each other."

Caleb nodded. "And it says badgers are nocturnal animals, which means. . ."

"I know what it means," said Kate. "It means they're awake at night and they sleep during the day."

"You got it!" said Caleb. "And listen to this . . . 'If a badger is away from home at daybreak, he may stay and rest with another badger family for a while before heading back to his own home.'"

"They must be hospitable animals," decided Kate.

"What does that mean?" asked Caleb.

"You know. Making guests feel comfortable," said Kate. "Like the missionaries who stayed with us last month." She laughed. "Maybe the traveling badgers are missionary badgers," she joked.

"There's more here," said Caleb. "This says that sometimes the badgers even allow a fox to stay over!" He grinned at his sister. "I haven't seen you entertaining any foxes lately."

"Oh, I don't know," said Kate. "That's like . . . that's like . . . I can't think of anything that it's like!"

"I can," said Caleb. "It might be like inviting someone you don't know very well to come over and play. Those new kids who've started coming to Bible club, for example."

"Better not let them hear you comparing them to foxes!" said Kate. "But you're probably right. We'd be practicing hospitality, like our Bible club memory verse said we should. Let's invite them!"

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you show hospitality both to friends and to kids you don't know well? Hospitality is one of the many virtues the Bible says you should have. Make everyone feel welcome and wanted at your home, your school, your church, or wherever you are. Talk to the new girl in your class. Have lunch with the guy who always sits alone. Ask the lonely person to play with you at recess time. Think of other ways to show hospitality. Then put them into practice!
