Badger

"I found out more about badgers," announced Kate as the family sat down to dinner. "Dad helped me check out information on the internet."

"I can't imagine you researching something when you didn't even have to," teased Caleb, "especially something like badgers!"

"I told you I think they're cute!" retorted Kate. "Besides, the article about them in that magazine you were reading was really interesting, so I wanted to learn more. Anyway, have you ever heard of a ratel?" Caleb and Mom shook their heads. "It's a small animal, like a badger, and it's also called a 'honey badger,'" Kate told them.

"Because it likes honey?" guessed Caleb.

"Right!" said Kate. "Some researchers say the honey badger has a bird friend called a 'honey guide.' When the honey guide finds a beehive full of honey, it leads the way to it. Then the honey badger uses its claws to break open the hive, and it gets a treat of lovely, sticky honey while the honey guide waits for it to finish."

"Does the honey guide get to eat some of the honey, too?" asked Caleb. Kate shook her head. "Well, eating up all the honey isn't a friendly thing to do!" declared Caleb. "I don't think honey badgers are very hospitable. They should share."

"The information Dad and I found said the honey guide doesn't want the honey," replied Kate. "It wants the beeswax and the bees' eggs and larvae in the honeycomb, and that's what the honey badger leaves behind."

"Interesting," said Mom. "So each one helps the other, and by helping each other they both benefit."

Dad nodded. "It's another example of how the Lord has blessed all of His creatures with different gifts and talents," he said. "The bird has the ability to locate honey and the ratel is able to get it out. God gives many different kinds of gifts to people, too. Some have musical ability. Some are good at sports. Others have the gift of speaking well. Still others are great writers. God wants us to use our gifts, not just for our own benefit, but also to bless and help other people."
