Evan tried to stay out of the movers' way as they carried furniture into the apartment. He hated moving, and it showed in his expression. "Why the long face?" asked one of the men who was helping.

"I don't like this apartment," said Evan. "It doesn't have a yard for me to play in." He didn't add that he didn't know anybody in the neighborhood and would have to go to a new school.

The man nodded. "I see," he said. "Well, if life hands you a lemon, buddy, make lemonade."

"Lemonade?" asked Evan with a frown.

The man smiled. "Sure," he said. "In other words, make the best of what comes to you. It may seem like a sour lemon, but it can turn into something sweet. You'll see."

Evan sighed. He sounds like Mom, he thought. She's always quoting that verse about God working things out for good.

As Evan sat down on the back steps, he noticed a boy sitting on the steps of the next apartment. Evan got up and sauntered over to talk to him. "Hi," said Evan, and the boy glanced up. He looked as if he had been crying. "What's wrong?" Evan asked.

"I no like it here," replied the boy softly. "In my country, the soldiers kill my father. My mother and sister and me-we come to America, but I no like. I no speak good English. American boys at school laugh when I talk."

Evan wasn't sure how to answer, but he was busy thinking. Did God send me here to help this boy? he wondered. Having to move sure is a 'lemon' for me, so maybe God wants me to make lemonade out of it by helping this kid.

Evan sat down on the step beside his new neighbor. "I'll help you learn English," said Evan. "We'll go to school together, and I'll play with you."

The boy looked at Evan. After a moment, he smiled. "I get ball," he said. He ran into his apartment.

Evan felt good inside as he waited for his new friend to come back. I guess God is turning our move here into something good after all! he thought.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Is there a "lemon" in your life-something that is hard or unpleasant for you? What are you doing with it? Are you whining and complaining about it, or are you "making lemonade"? God is not allowing that circumstance in order to hurt you. Trust Him to use it to work for your good. Ask Him to help you accept it and to see what positive thing He wants to bring from it-for you and possibly to help someone else as well!
